Goodbye

For the instructions for disappearing Challenge

By Caitlin CharltonPublished 5 months ago 1 min read

Step one:

Brush it off

let it die

All that feeling

Let it sigh

>

Step two: repeat these words, don’t deny

<~>~~~~>~~~~>—+++——-+-++<~>~~~~>~~~~>~~~~~>

Danger is in the heart of holding on

It's not so hard to let the garment fall

Wipe all the things you want to do, away

>

No play at work in school you cannot stay

Blue skies they don’t exist so take a trip

Danger is in the heart of holding on

>

Laughter is not the place where you belong

When friends would stick around and hold you close

Wipe all the things you want to do, away

<~>~~~~>~~~~>—+++——-+-++<~>~~~~>~~~~>~~~~~>

Step 3:

STOP!

>

All that singing

>

Start, when you’re brimming

The hate within is stinging

Leave with all the trust and clinging

>

Don’t pick up the phone, it’s ringing

<~>~~~~>~~~~>—+++——-+-++<~>~~~~>~~~~>~~~~~>

Step 4:

Leave, when the time is chilly

Everyone is F**king busy

Take a jacket black as night

A hood without a stripe

Keep it up

Erase the fright

Don't forget

Your friends and family

That is what you’ll leave behind

Not the things that you despise

Hi

Hello

And then

Goodbye

<~>~~~~>~~~~>—+++——-+-++<~>~~~~>~~~~>~~~~~>

    This goodbye guide is straight-up wise and chill!! When in doubt, rock that black jacket and a hood —it’s your stealth mode for peace. Goodbye never looked this slick! 💖

  • Okay, now that was exceptional writing. I like how you so expertly put this together step-by-step until we say goodbye. Great work!

    Goodbye as ritual: letting go becomes an art of survival. Hauntingly honest, beautifully liberating. 🖤

    Everyone is F**king busy <~ This! What a line. I felt this poem very powerful. I have to learn so much from you.

    I love how you straddled the conundrum of leaving or staying for the wrong reasons. Disappearing is rife with contradictions for most of us no matter how desirable. Great challenge entry! Good luck!

    Stunning work CC! WOW! 😱 I felt this one in my chest! Your A game is in full effect my friend! This one lingers after you read it! It is brilliant! Go gurl! That pen game is strong! 💪🏾🤩

    "Everyone is f**king busy" - that line LANDS, and how 🤯

  • I have experienced this many times and should be an empty, heartless soul, but it has tought me to be there for others whether or not they are there for me. Excellent challenge entry

    Oh my goodness, this was so powerful, Caitlin! And I came down to the comments to highlight the exact same line as Dharr! "Danger is in the heart of holding on." I felt this in my soul. Amazing piece!

  • "Danger is in the heart of holding on" I'm someone who gets attached very fast and I have abandonment issues. That line is soooo true. Although I know that, it's so difficult to not hold on. Loved your poem so much!

    I really felt the quiet devastation of letting go. The rhythm, the spirals, the fade-out. Awesome work!
