Gone Without a Trace

the man she made up in her head

Gone Without a Trace

She gave him shoes,

worn at the heel

from walking roads

he never knew

She carved his smile

from old regrets

and gave it warmth

he never felt

She made his eyes

too tired to lie

but bright with lights

she’d never see

She dressed him well

in second thoughts

and lined his coat

with used-to-be

She taught him how

to hold her close

then made him leave

without goodbye

No footprint left

no backward glance

no name to curse

no tears to dry

She built him whole

then watched him fade

a dream undone

by morning light

He wasn’t real

she knew that much

she turned the page

and left him there
