Goodbye Diane

By Barbara Gode WilesPublished 6 months ago 1 min read

Turn out the lights, Diane Grace.

She closes and locks the door behind her.

All family photos, news clippings, memories of Diane on fire.

The flames have taken the passport and only ash remains.

Goodbye Diane.

Mailbox now empty with no forwarding address.

Midnight train bound for California.

Where her friends and family are sure Diane wouldn’t go.

Earthquakes and such.

She is now and forever more . . . Pamela Margaret.

Goodbye Diane.

Pamela looks like Diane but their birthdays are different.

One is Taurus and one is Leo. Bull vs. the Lion.

Pamela’s hair is short and blond, adorned with gold hairclips.

A fur coat hanging evenly over her black slacks completes her outfit.

Her wool gloves and hat match her fashionable boots and coat.

Goodbye Diane.

Headed to the train station, Pamela is still whispering goodbye to Diane.

Pamela Margaret boards the train and disappears into the night.

Goodbye Diane Grace.
