The Bedouin Pony by Candida Baker
Give me a horse
And let me show you
The fire and wind
It carries within
Its earth palette
Of red and brown
Of roan and black
And bay and grey
The buckskin came to me
His soft fawn dapples
Swept with charcoal
Mane and tail
Written in his amber eye
Every split-second
Of delivered pain
Twelve times around the moon
Before the golden gossamer
Thread of love
Could reach him
One day
His energy burst from him
Great clouds of colour
Lighting up the sky
With the fierce passion
Of his spirit
We played together
The live-long day
And the word that echoed
From the hills around
The forest green against
A Payne’s grey sky
Was
Safe.
