Springtime bloomers set the garden stage
Living governed by rules as old as time.
And buried bulbs appear impervious to age
Surviving dormant in perennial paradigm.
It seems their static strategy is succeeding,
Arranged in tidy beds with not a thought
Of what the earth endured while they were sleeping
Or other living things their rules forgot.
Then springtime ends with weeks of heavy raining
And unprotected bulbs will turn to rot
Before the hot sun in the sky is reigning
And dandelions spring up in every spot.
These summer ‘ennials bloom with greater freedom
Uncontained by memories and garden lines.
Their roots spread deeper every season
Thriving in droughts and blooming through hard times.
This puff of life will spread across the planet
And seed a sprinkling of growth upon it.
