Frosted Waking

A poem about rising early and walking out into the first frost of Winter

The dawn is only still to us,

But birds are on another schedule,

Orchestrated fireworks of sound

To greet one, lone wanderer.

*

The first kiss of menthol air flows down my throat

And dragon plumes escape my lips

Further kisses blooming red,

Softly burning cheeks and nose.

*

An audience arises in a world

Swathed with gossamer white

Crisp diamonds on the grass,

A thousand frozen blades

Glistening and twinkling,

The satisfying crunch

As I wade my way through

Adds to the music of the morning.

*

The spider’s web reveals

Her complex tapestry,

Where yesterday I might never have noticed.

Now every surface sparkles

And every gnarl on every trunk

Stands out as if to speak.

*

Everything bewitched

And for another breath,

The very clock stands still,

Frozen.

Gorgeous imagery! Especially enjoyed these vivid lines: "And dragon plumes escape my lips / Further kisses blooming red, / Softly burning cheeks and nose." Really captured all the senses. Congrats!

  • Congratulations 🤩… whimsical. I especially like the vivid portrayal of Frost!: “ But birds are on another schedule, Orchestrated fireworks of sound To greet one, lone wanderer. * The first kiss of menthol air flows down my throat And dragon plumes escape my lips Further kisses blooming red, Softly burning cheeks and nose.”
