Chasing After Tomorrow

By Carolann DowsettPublished 4 years ago 1 min read

She fell and they watched,

gleefully cheering,

as she crumbled in defeat

to the cold heartless ground

that awaited her.

The gaping mouth of failure

waited eagerly,

as she descended towards the darkness

of self doubt and despair.

It had all been too much for her.

The horrors of the world

suffocated her soul,

and tore apart her reason,

until she could take no more.

She felt too deeply,

loved as a fool,

reached out too far

to those who refused to see her.

She wanted the end to come,

but it refused her.

Left her hanging on the edge

of an eternity

that suffered no remorse

and gave no reprieve.

She never understood the world

she had been so violently born into.

She felt like an alien

in a strange land,

a creature of the light

that was thrust into a world

that was drowning in sin

and shadowed by death.

And she was sure they knew,

the inhabitants of this dark,

turmolterous world.

They knew who she was,

that she didn't belong.

They set out to destroy her,

to tear her to pieces

before she could complete

whatever strange task she was sent here for.

The balance of life and death

hung within her soul.

She was buffeted by life's storms,

strangled by a grief

that refused to leave her.

Yet still she loved,

she refused to give in

to the bitter hatred that surrounded her.

She carried peace in her heart

and joy in her soul.

The world that hated her

couldn't break her.

So she survived,

and rose again,

to fight another day.

Chasing after tomorrow

with the wind in her hair.

A free spirit flying through a world

that neither sees or cares.
