First Emotions

What a Child Learns

When a baby is born

Only two emotions discerned

Happy or sad

is all that there is

For anything else

it has to be learned

Quickly they see, hear, and feel

What brings them comfort

And what causes pain

The former they’ll love

The latter disdain.

They’ll learn jealousy and selfishness

If not nurtured with care

Extreme focus maintained

To teach them to share

For them ever to hate

It must be taught

But learning to love

The emotion is sought

For parents of babies

The mission is clear

Teach them to be virtuous

Because you love them so dear

The scriptures tell us

Bring up your children

To be mentally fit

To be good adults

And they’ll not depart from it
