Fire And Ice

Their love is both extremes

She remembers the night with a smile,

A glorious night of love, passion and fire,

A single touch sends shivers down her spine,

The beginning of their love, their building desire.

***

She lays and relives the moments of the night,

The feelings, the sensations, the ultimate bliss,

Her smile widens as she reignites her wanting,

Leaning over as she wakes him with a kiss.

***

A slow grin works it’s way across his sensuous lips,

As he pretends to stay still within his slumber,

But she knows he has awoken,

And he knows she’s got his number.

***

They revisit the passion that has been building,

Smiles and moans the order of the morning,

Their bodies slick with sweat,

As the lightening hours of the sun a-dawning.

***

The kids are chattering outside their door,

As they climb from their lovers bed,

The day begins, their duty calls,

As the chaos of living quells their fire instead.

***

The noise increases into a crescendo,

As the day begins in a rush,

An argument builds as the panic mounts,

The silent screams in her head calling hush-hush.

***

The crushing pressure takes its toll,

He begins to yell and scream at her sacrifice,

They battle with words to and fro,

As their passion turns to ice.

***

Finally the kids are dropped off at school,

And he is dressed ready to head to work,

The noise has dissipated to stony silence,

Neither acknowledging the pain and hurt.

***

Just another day in their life of responsibilities,

Another round of commitment and assurance,

And as the day draws to a close once more,

They laugh away the conflict, marvelling at their endurance.

***

He apologises for the morning turmoil,

She accepts it with her grace,

As they climb into bed that evening,

And allow their passion to take its place.

***

The nights are heated, made for love,

Their passion on fire, their love celebrated,

The days are cooler, built on bricks of ice,

Pressurised and aggravated.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.

I guess that's the ups and downs of a marriage. The most important thing is to always make sure it doesn't stay too hot or too cold too long. A balance is very important. Wonderful poem!
