Fight or Flight

Abuse Comes In Many Forms

By Earl W. PearlPublished 2 years ago Updated 2 years ago 1 min read

First came dating, then berating

Our passion didn’t last

What started starry, ended sorry

The honeymoon had passed

The temper snaps, here come the slaps

A nasty, swollen eye

Gave all I could and all I would

No longer will I try

With my disgust, I had to trust

These multiple red flags

The price is steep, it’s time to leap

I’m packing up my bags

The insolence and inference

All added to my shame

Hostility, futility

A spouse I couldn’t tame

I know abuse can be obtuse

No love to truly boast

Of sticks and stones and broken bones

It's words that hurt the most

Subjugated, abdicated

I pray for perfect peace

With no more voice, I had no choice

I longed for sweet release

I reminisce that early kiss

Where now we only spar

To feel exulted, not insulted

It’s more than hits that scar

The kids implore, “No more, no more”

Our household's unconducive

I will not lie, I don’t know why

My wife is so abusive

If you feel she is abusive, what makes you stay?
