FARAWAY BLUES

Lost Tomorrows

Sullen skies mirrored my eyes,

Colliding with faraway blues,

His marble face stayed deathly still,

His path was never his to choose,

Reflections of lost tomorrows,

Challenged my poetic will,

I buried my deepest sorrows,

In the midst of the Melrose hills.

*

Composed of desperate beauty,

My writing grew plump with regret,

Grandmother thought it my duty,

To write what my heart can’t forget,

Windsong full of beautiful gloom,

I released in rivers of verse,

Perhaps my worth was truly doomed,

To fade into memories cursed?

*

Love can’t live where hatred dwells,

Nor can it speak with frozen lips,

Flirting with fortune is useless,

As heartache just tightens its grip.

My daydreams drowned in wishing wells,

As karma cracked cruelly her whip,

I sank down with my crooked crown,

Into a sea of dreams to slip.

*

Entombed in someone's lonely room,

Bleeding words into purest verse,

Crazed and dazed, I turned the page,

To bare my secrets, unrehearsed...

My face was smacked and out of place,

My life was sucked into reverse.

*

I swear my lack of hand-greasing,

Has bound me to poetry’s side,

The spawn of natural insight,

Had blessed me with unbridled scope,

This mother of whispering words,

Was left dangling on fraying hope.

*

The song of my childhood echoes,

In the beauty of Spanish guitars,

Between the lines of potent prose,

Inscribed in the runes of my past,

The death of addiction’s darkness,

Gave me eyes that shimmer like stars...
