Eyes in the Night

The deception of the senses

A pair of green-blue eyes stare

the next moment, only darkness

The sound of a call reaches my ear

only to fade into the whisper of trees

The scent of a freshly lit cigarette

spirals in circles into nothingness

The slightly crooked smile toward me

vanishes as the corners of your lips stiffen

The taste of lips

shaped like a kiss

Your hand reaching for me

touches my skin

and goosebumps spread

so I lose my footing

while the memory of you stands sharp

and the cold is my only companion

as your earthly remains

roll toward the shore

You disappeared from my life

I stand in the storm alone.
