Not far from our house
there is a ranch.
There are working horses
who are ambassadors
of the agricultural past
of that region.
We go to see them -
so peaceful to see
the gentle giants,
grazing green grass.
After work hours,
they return to the stable
in a trailer, with the master.
That day a horse was
resistant to climb the van
as the master prodded
again and again.
The master understood -
he held the leash,
took the horse for a walk.
around the vehicle,
and the horse climbed,
just like that.
Every critter has emotion,
they need acknowledgment,
dignity, and respect.
As I saw the treatment,
filled with empathy,
my respect for the master
soared, and I bowed, as
I learned kindness from him.
