Ending/Beginning
I know the calendar is just a construct,
a remnant meant to honor a long-gone pope,
*
but Gregory’s creation is what we have, so
we make do with the tools we must.
*
Solstices and equinoxes, the seasonal
changes, are elegantly hidden within the
*
vehicle for feast days and Catholic
consecrations, and all wrapped within
*
an ancient homage to the old gods:
*
The Sun’s Day, the Moon’s Day, Tiw’s Day,
Woden’s Day, Thor’s Day, Frigg’s Day, Saturn’s Day.
*
This year has not been easy for me and mine,
but we have worked to offset loss with creation,
*
art to ease our pain, hasten our healing, and
help others heal. Finding ways to be of service
*
to the world by holding one another closer.
*
The year ends with a black moon, a second
new moon within the month, an apt rarity
*
given the menu of eclipses and comets
and planetary movements foretelling
*
energetic conclusion and beginning. A black moon
to close the year, so set your intentions
*
to release old thinking, to shed old ways
that no longer serve, to make space
*
for the possibilities that come with this
Gregorian rebirth. With every moment
*
we have the opportunity to begin anew.
*
Take it.
