Beneath clouds dripping false hope,

rivers of allocation zero swirl to the sea

untasted by dying cattle.

mister and missus with kids in the car

drift away on the dust.

A poem inspired by an episode of Landline on Australian television a few years ago. The program followed a year in the life of an Australian farming family dealing with drought and the government system of allocating water to just about anyone other than the farmers whom the government pays lip service to as the 'backbone of the nation' whilst systematically making farming life untenable.
