Down on His Luck

The friend of a friend

By Phillip LoFasoPublished 5 years ago 1 min read

The friend of a friend

was down on his luck

he was stuck

depressed

just a mess

unemployed

and completely devoid of hope

Unasleep again

in too deep again

in the unmade bed

with a head full of panic and dread…

for what’s to come

or what might not be if he doesn’t take a shot

but not that kind of shot

Not the liquid kind

or the one that finds its way into your temple

So break it down and keep it simple

never give up

Don’t drink from the cup

unless you know who poured it

or who it’s for

it’s not your cup of tea

and it’s not easy

but so what

it’s up you should shut

Start living

start by forgiving

and end by forgetting and letting go

and letting Him

yeah, it’s Him or Her or It

you should let

To help you forget

Into the universe

sing your second verse

and who cares who’s listening

it’s you that’s glistening

like those stars in the silent night

so, take flight

now that you’re lighter

and mightier than the pen

that penned this song

to help you along

a moment at a time

He was a friend of Bill’s

not dollar bills

For few he had left

and not the kind that come in the mail

to tell of your failure

or to jail your ass for lack of funds

no, this is the Bill

that saved your ass

emptied your glass

till it looked half full

to your now opened eyes,

wide with the surprise

that belies the disease

and certainly pleases

that friend of a friend

Amend and Amen
