If One Thing Can Go Wrong...

One tiny thing.

Perhaps the tiniest.

Like that last ‘really needed drop of milk’ now soured.

Serenades of ice cream truck jingle one (hundred-and-one)

more

bless-ed

tiiiiime,

on top of Daddy’s inherited acid reflux

feeds contagious volumes.

Slips a glass tumbler from her hand.

Drip-dregs love from her heart

Ring-a-lings a phone 24/7 (but no social calls)

dogbarkingneighborsfussingsupperburningnervesfraying

bathroom FUNKING!

Then,

Mathematics turns cruel.

Life’s parallel lines break format and

shove her off on a 60˚godforsaken gradient absent friction

formulae

foundation

frickin’ meds.

So,

entities converge, (don’t they always?)

Compare notes and proclaim a

‘We-should-do-this-more-often’ Party

while her ivory linen dress snags,

threatening rip-exposure at muscular thighs

ever faithful to morning HIIT routines.

Cluelessness,

that previously unknown devilry-accelerant as thoughts congeal,

slides inside momentum

guarantees to garner speed

given distance and time,

add in ‘last month’s over-dues,’

with a research report due next Tuesday

worth forty-six percent of the semester grade

makes for a piggyback pile on,

the antithesis of joyride

Increased body mass ratio/fat composition,

she refused to Paleo Diet,

meant accelerated frustration ripe for outsourcing,

i.e. Someone else tracking her forces,

plotting an arduous line graph to Armageddon.

About to take full brunt profanities,

surely a masculine noun

in all other languages

since even the end is late and

Goddamn! I've been waiting past forever,

and

What da hell difference can be made now?

and

I wish me and you were someone else,

*last synapse firing*

for someone who felt

of softness and warmth,

of beachfront destination solitude at this

‘wherever-the-heck-we-are.’

So that one tiny thing,

rented a mask and snorkel,

swam the coral beds,

and marvelled the kaleidoscope full of life,

too enthralled by wonder to be the start of anything.

Wow, this piece hits hard! The way you captured that feeling of everything going wrong at once is painfully relatable and masterfully written.

  • Wooohooooo congratulations on your win! 🎉💖🎊🎉💖🎊

I felt the slow build of stress and frustration stir the acid in my own stomach till you let it all go in awe and glory by taking us to a beautiful world we rarely ever visit. Stunning poetry and congratulations on placing in the challenge! Richly deserved!

I absolutely love how you took your time on each line. It was like a slow and careful journey through word and thought. 'Tiiiiime' had a really good effect, that pause before the next line was needed and appreciated. Inherited acid reflux. Not a great cocktail to inherit. I love that the 24/7 calls led to words with no separation. Was that frustration 🤔 'Absent friction formulae foundation' an absolute dream to read all together. Frickin' meds here goes the frustration. Right on time 👌🏾 Linen dress snags. Oh boy would that be a heartbreaking thing. Linen being such a luxurious fabric. The places you took us to. The diet, the masculine noun. Sets us on the path of a mind that is well acquainted with life. So much so that you could teach us a few things or two. I like the words or lines in bold. They really brought your personality out. I like how it paused the rhymes too. For effect of thought. Digression. I loved this. Truly impressed. 👌🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾🤗❤️

It makes no sense but at the same time makes perfect sense. The rhythm is carefully crafted, which gives the poem a composed and intentional tone. This pairs well with the sincerity of the message.

    Wow. 💖

  • Oh my, all that acceleration, momentum, parallel lines, gradient, friction, distance, time, speed, etc, made this feel like a combo of a maths and physics lesson hehehehehehe. I loved it! Also, just wanna let you know, my latest story has nothing to do with horror. Im fact, it's published in the Fiction community and doesn't have a content warning. It's just a normal story, if you wanna read it 🥰🥰🥰
