Do We Choose

Or is it out of our hands

Do we choose who we meet in life

Or is it fate, depending on our needs,

Do we choose the pets we take home

Or is it down to the animals’ breeds?

***

Do we choose the family when born

Or is it we choose when conceived,

Do we choose the food that we like

Or based on the nutrients retrieved?

***

Do we choose the partners we attract

Or is it all about the lessons we learn,

Do we really choose our career path

Or is it just about the money we earn?

***

Do we choose the way our brain thinks

Or is this all about nature or nurture,

Do we choose the experiences we live

Or is it purely a case of self torture?

***

Do we choose the things that we know

Or is this dependent on our society,

Do we choose how we always feel

Or is this the blame of social anxiety?

***

Do we choose to love the heat or cold

Or is that entirely up to our bodies,

Do we choose the activities we enjoy

Or is it pre ordained we think of hobbies?

***

Do we choose the illnesses we catch

Or is that always completely hereditary,

Do we choose our final resting place

Or is that up to the boss of the cemetery?

***

Do we choose the dreams that we have

Or is that always because of stimuli,

Do we choose the luck that we attract

Or is that just life attempting to justify?

***

Do we choose the adventures in life

Or is that about what our soul yearns,

Do we choose the books we read

Or they choose us so we can learn?

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
