Adventures On The High Seas

All fun and games until the storm rolls in

No work schedule today, so what does that mean

That I’m a lady of leisure, this day is now all mine,

I have woken with a hankering for an adventure

Shall I go to the beach, on a hike or both combined.

***

Mmmmmmmmm, well now shall we wait and see

It’s all going to depend on the weather I guess,

Rain, hail or shine, shall I head out or stay inside

Feel energetic or relax, a bit of both, more or less.

***

If I could experience anything at all, what’ll I choose

What exactly would my dream adventure be today,

Oh I know, I know, how about a cool sailboat ride

A day sailing the calm seas, so what do you say?

***

The decisions been made and the day began

An adventure like no other as I sail the sea,

I hop aboard the sail boat, full of excitement

Calm waters as flat as far as the eye can see.

***

Hours later, as I’m laying sunbathing on the deck

I notice there are dark storm clouds in the sky,

Rushing towards us, full of rain and hailstones

Wind whipping a gale and waves metres high.

***

The boat is heaving, crashing upon each torment

As Mother Nature throws it’s all at a sudden whim,

Crashing, toppling from side to side, so furiously

I fear if I survive this, it’s going to be a long cold swim.

***

Suddenly the boat crashes onto its side, broken

The waves crashing over me, the boat starts to sink,

Just as it goes under, I sight land not that far away

If I could swim there safely, I’ll survive this I think.

***

Swimming through the destructive ocean water

Asking the universe to help me find the strength,

When I feel sand beneath my tired feet, I made it

But then as I stand I’m hit with a powerful stench.

***

There are human remains scattered far and wide

And there in front of me is a grizzled old pirate,

Holding cutlass in hand, he begins to walk to me

I pull out a gun, wondering if it’ll work if I fire it.

***

The pirate is gaining ground, I’ll have to chance it

I point my wet gun, aim steady and pull the trigger,

Whereby a blast of letters explode, raining down

Confusing the pirate, he freezes, hearing me snigger.

***

Well that’s one way of disarming, of beating a pirate

I’ve survived the adventure and will reach old age,

It sure was a close call, as I slow down my heart beat

Another great story, as I turn that very last page.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
