Poem

Bufflehead duck and his lady enjoy a day

of open water on the pond.

His large white-patched head stands out

beside her gray-brown coloring.

Meandering the pond also are two larger ducks,

Lesser Scaups, male and female -

his head is tucked as he floats,

and his partner is grooming her feathers.

The Buffleheads paddle closer and closer toward the male Scaup,

who floats serenely, his head tucked on his back feathers,

He calmly watches the Buffleheads paddling toward him, observing with a golden eye, as they close the distance.

Inching steadily toward the Scaups,

a collision imminent, the male Bufflehead dives, disappearing into the deep.

The female Bufflehead begins grooming herself, showing she is not a danger, mimicking the larger Scaup female.

The Scaup male is resting in a floating stance

one eye gleaming, watchful still, head tucked onto his back, enjoying a carefree friendly float,

while the male Bufflehead continues his underwater swim.

I learn so much from your stories and the other reader comments. I wonder what conversation those ducky guys would have if humans weren't listening?

Dear Ac ~ I often relate to your stories; hard to keep up with them. But, I have to fast-paddle this with you that has occured to me from your cute story. Our home overlooks a large reservoir-lake in the distance. Just recently a zillion long neck Canadian Geese flew in to graze on the growth at its ledges. Well the native Coyotes hunch and circle them, in numbers, but never 'attack'...they know better as those huge Geese will have nothing to do with that intimidation. Please let me know if you want me to delete this...I don't want it to take away from your presentation. Happy Holiday, j.in.l.a.

  • So cool to read your story about ducks and they are so pretty. It was unclear from your story about whether they get along or not so I looked them up and it sounds like they aren't buddies but they share a similar habitat frequently. Thank you!😊💕
