Divided by Our Skin

Forbidden by our fathers voice

Divided by Our Skin

Your fingers traced the line of my arm,

as if trying to reach beneath,

but no touch could cross the wall,

divided by the skin we wore.

I wanted to merge into your soul,

to feel the pulse you hid so deep,

hearts spoke a language our bodies denied,

fragile, desperate, unspoken.

The space between us grew like oceans,

each glance an attempt at bridge-building,

yet our hands always fell short,

hovering above, never joining.

In the quiet, I imagined a bridge,

our blood mingling in the same stream,

but the mirror reflected only two halves,

each yearning, separate, and alone.

Even when your lips brushed mine,

the spark could not fully ignite,

our skin a stubborn divider,

turning closeness into longing.

I still remember the ache in your gaze,

the cruel distance of flesh and bone,

how love fought to bloom between us,

even when every touch seemed to fail.

We spoke in whispers,

sighs that barely carried across the space,

our souls reaching for one another,

always divided, never fully joined.

And yet, every moment we shared

left a mark inside me,

proof that even boundaries of skin

cannot erase the pull of love.

This describes so many cases I have encountered through my life, occurring to friends, relatives and even people I don't know but heard about. And I always asked the same question over and over again: "Why they can't?" Lovely work, Marie.
