Distracted

A humorous, all too real poem on writing distractions

I sit down to write, new document open

pen and journal at my side

words ready to release

full of inspiration

I barely form a sentence when something feels amiss

An empty space where a mug of coffee should be

I can't write without my comfort drink

Returned, warm mug of coffee in hand,

I write again as words slowly form

A sudden flash catches my eye

Another social media notification

My eyes pull away from my writing, surely, I must see!

Another follow, another like, maybe even a comment

I return to my writing from my social media trip,

my eyes glance at the time, deceiving me.

An hour has passed. That can't be! There must be some mistake!

Determined more than ever for a success writing day,

I focus with fierce determination.

No social media until this is complete!

Through my determination, I contemplate a

better word for rush, a more appropriate word for laugh

A thesaurus tool will be sure help me out

What wonder that there are many words for rush and even more for laugh.

Blitz, dash, bolt, charge? Which synonym for rush?

Do I use smirk or howl or snicker?

No, giggle's a most appropriate synonym for laugh

Before I know it, my vocabulary has expanded,

Birr and sortie are new words to me!

Before I know it, I've ventured into words

that haven't the slightest relation to rush or laugh

I'm afraid I'm distracted once again!

Mug soon empty, it's time for a refill

and maybe also a snack

As I leave my spot, I wonder in a mix of amusement and frustration,

Will I get any writing done?
