Discovering Me

A Poem

By Danyelle LewinsonPublished 8 years ago 1 min read

I’ve often heard return to your roots.

Remember why you starting writing in the first place.

So I took their advice.

I’m discovering me even thought it’s a journey.

Question is are you ready?

I’ll take you back to 8th grade.

13 years old didn’t know who she was.

Tutoring in my worst subject... math.

So as my tutor left to take care of something I sat in thought.

I needed to get my mind off math for the moment.

So I grabbed paper and scribbled a short poem.

It rhymed, it was basic but it got my mind off what I was learning.

When she came back in and read it told me it was good.

I thought nothing of it and brushed it off.

So I took to my diary when I got home.

I wrote what I felt and that felt like a weight lifted off my shoulders.

I thought maybe a journal isn’t so bad.

Then poetry became a thing again.

I had to write for class.

Man, writing felt like pulling teeth.

Then I figured why not write from a different point of view.

Things became easier.

I put myself into my poetry.

I used events to inspire me.

Am I discovering me?

Yes, but in order to do that I had to feel the pain.

I had to feel the vain.

I had to feel the hurt.

I felt alive again.

Even though I was broken.

I was unspoken.

I couldn’t figure me out.

I’m still just discovering me.

Til this day I can’t say that I have truly discovered me.

But, I’m still out there somewhere.

I’m inspired.

I’m dedicated.

I’m still just me.

I’ve grown as a writer.

I’ve grown as a person.

I’m still discovering me.
