Dear Moon,
Just a moment I spend with you this autumn night. I'll admit that I have paid you little mind in all the years I've spent under your watchful eye. And that's been pretty disrespectful, to say the least. But I don't want you to assume that in any way or form I believe you worthy to be worshipped, only saying that you certainly deserve to be noticed.
Many have noticed you. Some have worshipped you. Others have written poems about you and legends have been formed in regard to your effect on those below you on planet earth.
I can remember several full moons in particular I thought to be of particular breathtaking beauty. One was on the lake in a boat, my husband, young sons, and I doing some night fishing. It was a cold night and we had hot chocolate to warm us. You seemed to shine and smile and join in our contentment.
Another time, as I travelled by car through the still New Mexico canyon in the dark of night, the fullness of your light shaped silhouettes of the mountains and cactus for me and my companions to be in awe over. Without your light we might have been afraid of our surroundings, feeling overwhelmed by the isolation and sheer power of nature that lurked around us.
Yet another moon, silvery, round, and surrounded by midnight blue hues guided me as I drove on a solo night trip to visit my mother in another state. It was if I was being protected and shown the way, encouraging me to pray with gratefulness in my soul.
With all the waxing and waning, the names given to set times and seasons, I must admit to being only a novice at the Farmer's Almanac. But I do know that some of the old folks back when I was young, adhered greatly to those lunar rules for better gardening, when to cut hair, and when a woman was most "fertile."
What I do have experience in was the unmistakable and uncanny effects that a full moon had at the hospitals. Every nurse worth their salt knows...full moons equal the coming out of all the crazies...(bizarre behaviors, that is.) There is no denying that.
Moon, you have been around way longer than I and will certainly be around long after I am gone. You have influenced me in my life. You have provided for mankind without a thanks. You have been content in your purpose and powerful in your effects. You have been overlooked at times. But you are important to us all on this blue and green orb.
Thanks!

I love this letter of gratitude to the moon… along with humour mixed in!
What a heartfelt tribute! I love how you've woven together all these personal memories with the moon, from that cozy fishing trip to the New Mexico canyon to those wild hospital nights. Beautiful piece!
Noticed over being worshipped. Yes. Yes and yes. Ooo we get a bit of your life with your husband and kids, thrown in. I like that. Especially when you said the moon joined in your contentment. Absolutely beautiful how you described the moons help when you went to the still new Mexico canyon. Especially that the light shaped the silhouettes of the mountains and the cactus. Outstanding attention to detail and poetic placing. You even learned about what it was like back then. In regards to the moon. When to cut hair and when a woman was most fertile. Interesting detail to remind the moon of. The crazies at the hospital. Oh man. That must've been... Well. An adventure of sorts lol. On this blue and green orb. I loved this so much. You kept a tender and loving tone throughout and I felt every word. Outstanding work Shirley 🤗❤️
Wonderful letter and love the quote as well
