David's Shadow

song left for me

I held you close in my arms for just a little while

and then off you went, but always turned to give me a smile.

I watched as you grew, so largely lived, and you learned...and

my heart sung with your accolades, stung in times you were spurned.

Always surprised and amazed by boundless love you generously spread

because of you, lessons of "how mankind should be" formed in my head.

Through your eyes, as you looked into God's world, smiling with such glee

I discovered the word, "joy" as it burst out as a gift from you to me.

So, how am I going to be able now to this new reality, reconcile?

where will I find again, this kind of love and joy and such a kind smile?

Deep inside my heart lives a beautiful, golden treasure chest

There I keep my fondest possessions, the very best of the best!

There you will always be alive, smiling, laughing, and giving...

I still hold you close in my being, just in a different place you are living.
