Dervish

A sonnet

By Emma Kate Coleman (July 26, 2023)

If I could spin around until I saw

the burning light that most will never see,

I think that I would stop to stand in awe

into the eyes of love that stare at me.

They match a sapphire ring's small glinting gems.

the wings of butterflies beneath the sun.

I long to see what prize from this gaze stems,

my heart and not my hand completely won.

His hands droop not as victims to dismay,

his fingers strong the heavy scythe to hold.

But I, too weak to work with him all day,

will lose my grip on love's reins, cracked and old.

For love without kind eyes nor lips to speak

leaves love-forgotten kisses on my cheek.

This sonnet was first written during the 2014-15 academic year in response to a prompt issued by my high school creative writing teacher, Lisa Sopher.

Amazing sonnet! There’s nothing quite like being the recipient of a loving gaze, but it’s exhausting to try to work for it.
