Depeditation
An entry for Penny Fuller's The A-Z of Unusual Words Challenge
My word: Depeditation - in medical terminology, a depeditation is the amputation of a foot.

This word has no significance to me whatsoever. But I love all words, so in that, it has a place in my heart.
Penny's challenge opens me up to exploring vocabulary which is not in my everyday vernacular and whilst, I'm perhaps more adventurous and contrived in my word choice when writing, there is a tendency to choose from words already known. Therefore, it's good to explore and experiment and that's what I've chosen to do here.
I also have a love for nonsense verse. Poetry, for me, is about expression and it doesn't have to be centred on one thing: love, nature, loss. Poetry can be about anything and if it prompts a reaction in you on a human level, whether that's emotional, philosophical or merely an appreciation for the way that the words have been put together, then it's done its job.
One of my favourite poems is from a collection that I bought to feed poetry into the minds of my impressionable young sons and one of the poems made an impact on my eldest. I can't remember the poet nor the title of the poem but it lists a lot of cakes and then ends with the line mentioning how the poet has ended up with "stummer cake". I'm going to leave that with you to work out for yourself but the play on word sounds that that engenders is just brilliant in my opinion.
And so, to a daft and macabre poem about depediation.

A man forgot to lock his doors,
Forgetting is the worst of flaws,
The key turn he could not recall
Was cause for literal downfall,
As door unlocked, a thief did enter
And from his leg, a foot dismember.
Too late, he sensed "Something's afoot"
And now, he's left with just a foot.

I legit laughed and then gleefully read this out loud to a family member. I love good rhythm in rhyming poems, but this was definitely a delightful kind of macabre
this is great, Rachel!
Oh wow! If you chose that word, this is the perfect poem to exemplify it. Well done.
Very cute poem. I like trying to guess word meanings, but I had no success with yours š³.
I love the whimsy in this poem Rachel, it made me laugh when that final line hit! Great work!
Haha!!! I had no idea where you were going to go with that word, what a pleasant surprise!
I love the gung ho let's have it all vibe of this piece.
Loved this, Rachel. Always loved your philosophical discourse on poetry!
Haha! This was fab!
Wow, this was great!!
Haha that was fun.
A fab confab about a forfeited foot! And fox foot wraps are frosting on this loaf.
Love the word choice, your deliciously dark take and the reappearance of Fox Socks! Well done all round, chum! I'm dancing between a quite serious and reverential word/poem for this challenge and something ridiculous. Who knows what will come to the surface! Well done again!
Now that's a hoot! Hahahahahahaha! š¤£š¤£š¤£š¤£š¤£š¤£
