Suspended in stygian brine
Disorientation
Total absence of
Directional indications
Indecision paralyzes
No sound or
Motion inviting my frantic eyes
kicking, spinning, searching
For any signs of life
Spotted
What I take to
Be lantern light
Bobbing
Growing
I swim with all my might
A cloud of translucent
Gelatinous flesh
Tentacles jet past me at
Breakneck pace
The light continues
Toward me to drift
I stroke with a hitherto
Unfound strength
The light looms
A glowing haze
Realization dawns
Too late
Jaws are closing all around
Like a fish on a line
Drawn into the angler’s maw

This was so unique, such a great take on the challenge!
After your cicadian rhythm poem, when this popped up in my feed, I hoped it would more material on cool, alien looking animals. I 100% expected this to be on anglerfish, and I 100% expected it to be great— you did not disappoint! Love the sense of desperation and the final trap of the jaws. Also, if you wrote this for the lanterns poetry challenge, good luck! If you win off this it will be well earned, love the creativity of thinking bioluminescence for the lantern prompt :)
