Dear Childhood Imagination

A Thank You Note

By Jeffrey SparksPublished 3 years ago Updated 3 years ago 1 min read

Dear Childhood Imagination:

Oh, how I long to see you again

An absolute marvel of a child’s best friend

Like magic, boxes became race cars

And fun had no end.

+++

Adults may recall a bird extinct with time

Yet, there is another that comes to my mind

My imaginary friend named Dodo,

was by far, bar none, the most kind.

+++

With a similar appearance to the familiar Looney Tune

Dodo and I would race cars in the back of my room

Our world was a playground of wondrous things

And we were rulers who served as the kings

You could find us in backyards, swinging on swings.

(or before dinner was ready, down by the creek)

+++

Dodo and I loved to play games

Before we got rowdy, broke something, and he took the blame

Since he has been gone, it’s not been the same,

Which is why I am taking a moment to refrain:

+++

Thank you, Childhood Imagination,

For being there when I needed you most,

Playing with me as Dodo, in the form of a crazy bird ghost.

And after writing this, I know now when I will see you again:

The day my first child is born and he needs his first friend.
