My hand engulfs our daughter's
Her tiny little paws
Little freckles that are mine
And fingers that are yours
Her hair started out your colour
But now resembles mine
I wonder what else will change
As she grows older, over time
Her little cry is timid
I know that one day she will roar
From the strength she gained from you
She'll grow up strong, I'm sure
Half of her is you
And the rest takes after me
Who'll she turn into as an adult
We can't wait to see
I hope she has your patience
Your kindness and your witt
Though I pray she has my insight
for emotion, I'll admit
I can't believe we've made a person
With nuances at the ready
People skills she will not lack
She'll have them by the plenty
At the moment, you are tired
I can see it on your face
But they are only young once
Slow and steady wins the race
Before we know it, she will grow
Into a tiresome, troublesome teen
Who wouldn't be caught dead with us
And scream things that are mean
Until then, we should cherish
Every sleepless night and endless day
Before we have the chance to blink
She'll fly the nest, to seize the day
When she finally gets there
Our stubborn, headstrong girl
We will reassure her that we love her
And she will always be our world
And when that finally happens
If she doesn't behave as she is meant
We can explain to her the truth
She was an accident
