Dandelions

A Poem Inspired by a Prompt from Poppy

Words upon the wind come drifting,

Finding purchase in the soul

And we wander through them, sifting,

'Til the muse acquires control

*

And we nurture those it chooses

Tending leaf, stem, bud, then bloom,

Weaving dandelion flowers,

Golden from the poet's loom.

*

Here, they linger and they mellow,

Seasoned gently as they age

'Til at last, a fragile blowball

Is committed to the page.

*

O, but be not gentle, reader!

Shake the "clock" as you peruse!

Stir it well and let the breezes

Blow the pappi where they choose,

*

So the words again go drifting,

Seeking out another soul,

One whose spirits may need lifting

Or a piece to make them whole.

Ah the kids love to chase those dandelions, so too we chase these stories. Come hither Summer. Lovely.

My oh my, sir. You've done it again. I love how you run parallels with dandelions and poetry. Magical stuff really. Well done sir!

Gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous poem!! "And we nurture those it chooses Tending leaf, stem, bud, then bloom, Weaving dandelion flowers, Golden from the poet's loom." That is just phenomenal. Exceptional poem and thank you for your kind words too Dana! The thoughts are reciprocated!!!

  • If I had written this, it would have been either for Mike's "Waiting" prompt or the "Misplaced" challenge, as either of those would have expressed my relationship to it. But this works quite well, too. Great job, Dana!

  • A lovely garden of words through which to wander! Well-wrought!

  • This was so wonderful, optimistic, stunningly beautiful and it put a smile on my face! Loved your poem!

  • I never feel qualified to comment on poetry. This was gorgeous though. I loved the word choice as well as the rhythm of the stanzas. Words. Ah, they truly are like dandelion fluff.

"Here, they linger and they mellow, Seasoned gently as they age 'Til at last, a fragile blowball Is committed to the page. * O, but be not gentle, reader! Shake the "clock" as you peruse! Stir it well and let the breezes Blow the pappi where they choose" The poetic progression across these stanzas, and really, the entire poem, is rather stunning. Next level. You completely transform the central image/metaphor of the dandelion. Here, specifically, it's the fragile blowball being the pinnacle of the writer's work, left to be assumed as the end of that process, and then the insistence in the next line is to not be gentle with it! Amazing. Amazing. This is seriously marvelous, Dana!

  • This is amazing! It's one of my favourites! "And we nurture those it chooses Tending leaf, stem, bud, then bloom, Weaving dandelion flowers, Golden from the poet's loom." So delightfully positive! Thanks.

This beats out that spatchcocked chicken one you did, which took some doing! The rhythm is so soothing and the words are beautiful. 😁

So agree with what Hannah wrote. It seems this one has converged from the essence of your nature loving self and the writer who must paint it.
