Damsel Fly Gossamer
Memory of You

Dulcet tones from memory echo far and away, damsel fly gossamer as a summer day.
The dream unfolds peaceful as a gentle brook and as unreachable as a star,
Remember how you arched your neck and sang from afar, So easy, you're so easy to love?
But the moment's only a moment after all, revealed and then masked now all the more.
.
Seasons come and go, but no change for me can they make, your memory lost to deep space.
The sound of your laughter once turned my sadness to joy, all record lost long before.
We swore to grow old together, can you understand? Not cursed to care and say fare thee well.
Can we pretend, every now and then that death cannot our love ever end?
.
So easy, easy to love, cause you're so easy to love.
As a cloudless day up above, you're so easy to love.
.
That made so much harder all that we suffered after, poor star-crossed lovers,
Storm clouds bore dust coarse as gravel and smote our home as a hammer bludgeons a babe's rattle.
We held our collected breaths, pled fortune's charms and prayed for mercy sweet.
By morn the storm had passed, but dormant panels smoking, our computer crashed, the antenna for our comms shattered and smashed.
.
Mars' moons, Terror and Fear, gaped cruelly from the sky above the frozen land before the sun's lustrous gold began to obscure all lesser orbs.
One gage upon the panel trembled weakly, the oxygen had not yet ceased to flow.
But all sense of adventure was lost that had once called us to such a cold and heartless place.
Beyond our walls, the temperature 70 below, we sat together, alone, and stared at any other than our beloved own.
.
So easy, easy to love, cause you're so easy to love,
Perform for me a lament, sad song an echo from your lovely throat.
.
Our gear destroyed; no more oxygen could we make. How long could we delay fate? you asked, Days? Maybe weeks?
We are lost, you answered yourself, death by a dream, as memory returned your song to me, So easy, easy to love.
The food, processed paste, we squeezed out of hard tubes. Tastes of offal, you groaned, better to starve than to eat waste from a hog.
You pushed away my offered hand, turned away from hope. Look at me, dear one, but you answered not, you're so easy to love.
.
For days you drank water only. Reason could not move you, as each new dawn only weakened you further.
How could we stay here, scared and alone? How long could we hold onto hope as hunger stole from your cheeks a once lovely glow?
But you would not even eat the foul paste blended by means of H2O.
Better death than that, you answered hoarsely. Oh how my eye's flooded and flowed.
.
So easy, easy to love, cause you're so easy to love,
Before the storm took our measure, we were so fearless and young.
.
My dear one, perform for me a lament, sad song an echo from your lovely throat.
Chant a tale of doomed lovers who dared the stars as Arthur once craved Avalon's far shores.
We were so fearless and young, before the storm took our measure, we were so easy, so easy to love.
One last journey down memory lane, my dear, you're so easy, easy to love, you're so easy to love.
.
The days could not pass gently once you retreated to the Cyro chamber and locked the entrance door.
But what followed was harder all the same, the bang, bang, bang upon the walls that never stopped, as a carpenter endlessly hammers away.
Do not leave me here alone echoed across our small home, bang, bang, bang, so easy, you're so easy to love.
When the latch unlocked, and bang, bang, bang came to a stop, my hands, knuckles swollen red, trembled at your command.
.
So easy, easy to love, cause you're so easy to love,
One last caress of your cheek and tearful farewell, you're so easy to love.
.
Too weak to enter cryo on your own, you pleaded my help to take your frozen home.
They won't come before the end, you reasoned badly. But argue we could not, for you're so easy, so easy to love.
We embraced long and hard before setting the Cryo's controls, tears blurred my endmost gaze.
One last caress of your cheek and tearful farewell, as a cloudless day up above, you were so easy to love.
.
The rescue came after the Cryo Protocall could not be undone, your memory secreted away, your lovely features wholly gone.
The sky above black as coal, the atmosphere surrounds, severe and cold, the oxygen pack on my back and helmet securely closed.
Thoughts of you follow softly beneath the sky endless deep, your last gaze so desperate and sweet.
Your eyes stare back from the stars far above, as the cold creeps through my old and feeble bones.
.
So easy, easy to love, cause you're so easy to love,
Perform for us a lament, dear one, lay our bones upon the frozen dust.
.
To Mars we have returned, under that cold, cruel sky, one last journey for us together to make.
Walk with me love, follow the sun where er' she leads, these unearthly lands to us now bound.
Hold onto my hand as the sun at last sets, embrace us now and forget all former regret.
Perform for us a lament, my love, lay together our bones, forever let us rest.
.
Remember, dear one, when we were fearless and young, when we were so easy, so easy to love?
Your laughter always turned my sadness to joy, the memory of any part or character of you yet floods my eyes,
Remember how you arched your neck and sang from afar, So easy, easy to love, cause you're so easy to love?
Dulcet tones from memory echo far and away, damsel fly gossamer as a summer day.

This is tragically beautiful 🥹.
Absolutely gorgeous 😍
I'm so sorry I missed this before. What a force of writing! Being human in an alien setting, with tendrils reeling us back to the human, warts and all. This is an epic achievement. I'd say "you at your best," but then I can't wait to be there when you peak. (You haven't yet, as evidenced by each "next" surprise.) I am thrilled to be on that ride.
I love how human you made such an inhuman setting here.
AMAZING! This read like an epic ballad while immersing me in a sci-fi setting with compelling character dynamic! So creative and well done, John!
This poem is so easy to love. Excellent work, and such sadness. Well done.
This is a masterwork, John! There's a deeply mournfulness to every rhythmic affirmation of beauty and love, and presented in such a creative and uniquely tragic circumstance. Truly brilliant!
Haunting and aching, this one sings. Beautiful writing, as always, John!
Wow, John! So beautiful. I often feel with your work that as a reader, I am in this world, a future one, and a past one. Quite a gift for you to transcend 'now'. Keep it up!
Omgggg, this was so poignant, intense and extremely emotional! This was so well done!
This is next level stuff, John. This poem transcends the words used to write it. This line: 'Mars' moons, Terror and Fear, gaped cruelly from the sky above the frozen land before the sun's lustrous gold began to obscure all lesser orbs.' So vivid! This poem was so easy, so easy to heart. 💖😍
Oh....this is so sad, yet wonderful, a beautiful love poem. This is a vibrant description: Storm clouds bore dust coarse as gravel and smote our home as a hammer bludgeons a babe's rattle. I loved the repetition and this line following the first but changed up. We were so fearless and young, before the storm took our measure, we were so easy, so easy to love.
