Curious
For Ellie Hoovs' Unofficial Wonderland Poetry Prompts Challenge Day 9
A mind that's open is a mind that searches.
It's scared, yes, but there is something
About that horizon that beguiles it:
- Look at me. Come to me. Be part of me.
And the mind thinks:
What is there, there? Who is there, there?
Beyond, what will I see?
I must try...
And so that mind reaches
With brightness as its target -
The light, the light! The star so bright! -
And the hope of the company
Of stimulating knowledge
In the presence of those who glow...
But with eyes on the prize
And its warmth and its surety,
The distractions of the vapid
Trip like jungle vines.
Whoops! There it goes!
Mind! Mind!
Straight down the rabbithole
Down, down, down.
And the mind is lost
At the bottom of a hole
Bogged down, helpless
Like a cat in a well, yowling.
And slowly, slowly, the darkness encroaches,
And slowly, slowly, the mind retreats,
And slowly, slowly, the light is no more.

Curiosity beautifully depicted reaching for light and stars⦠sad spiral down when we lose it.
Quite the ominous ending! Really like the rhythmic repetition you used in this! Well wrought, Rachel!
Beautifully written! Your words create such a powerful illustration. I felt myself stretching toward the horizon then tumbling into blackness.
Oh my, that felt so sad. Wait, was it supposed to be sad, or am I misinterpreting it? π π
Beautifully done, Rachel.
And so we evanesce. Aw c'mon, you can't give me something like this & not expect me to use my favorite word, lol!
The fading/ sinking feeling was so well written, I feel that heaviness! Great work, Rachel!!
Like falling down a hole, I was trapped in this poem.
