the first bite is heaven, enticing the ego

mutating the self with a plastic crown

how does one deal when truth is zero?

.

they drink, they comment, they call me amigo

makes my head swell, defeated the frown

the first bite is heaven, enticing the ego

.

it doesn't matter if this is placebo

the effect is wanted, fills me up and down

how does one deal when truth is zero?

aiming for more like a famished torpedo

consuming it all, free to live unbound

the first bite is heaven, enticing the ego

.

the haze of want, caught in a free flow

no other tastes or desires can be found

how does one deal when truth is zero?

.

the craving won't rest, i'm no one's hero

but that doesn't matter, i aim to astound

the first bite is heaven, enticing the ego

how does one deal when truth is zero?

Lamar, congratulations on your win❣. I am so sorry I am late reading and commenting. The ego is certainly a tricky little bugger, isn't it? Oh, and the cover photo is absolutely perfect.

  • This is excellent, Lamar. How I missed this the first time around I do not know. But I’m glad I did come across it today. The rhymes are great and it flows smooth while reading. Congratulations on your win.

  • Well-wrought, and accolades well-deserved! This applies across a spectrum of human behavior.

This is stunning, Lamar. The metaphoric feeding of the ego in this is brilliant. A great reminder how desperately so many of us (me included) lust after the lime light. Congrats on making the winner’s circle on this one! Richly deserved!

This is fantastic, Lamar. That first line made me smile! βš‘πŸ˜πŸ‘ And I kept smiling throughout. I've read a lot of sad villanelles (and wrote a sad one myself) so this had a different flavor for me (pun intended.) I think a lot about my own ego, and about whether or not people seek to feed their own. You are a consummate artist, sir. You poetry is always a treat. βš‘πŸ’™Bill⚑

Writing about one of the seven deadly sins and you did one great job in your description of this one.

I love this line "the first bite is heaven, enticing the ego". Now I think about it, this is really how Christmas gluttony feels, but it could be translated to so many other cravings, too. Perfect.

"the craving won't rest, i'm no one's hero" That line felt so relatable. Loved your poem!

Why do I think this isn't about food? Not sure what your intent was, but the second stanza reminded me of the intoxicating feeling I get every time I get a comment on my stories or a response to one of my comments. Loved this poem.
