Coquito Christmas

A Puerto Rican Tale

Relatives with loud mouths, banging at the front door

With Bendiciones a plenty and Wepas galore.

Music blasting Christmas songs, mostly old and some new,

from El Burrito to Feliz Navidad, to Aguanile for the ancestors too.

The congas and the Guido, traditionally played,

And with a fork since that piece of the guido was always misplaced.

Arroz con guandules, jamón, and pernil, the essentials of dinner,

Leaving all chances of the new years goal in getting thinner.

Adults with Coquito in hand, creamy coconuts and cinnamon sticks,

Even the kids got a taste of Coquito with a warning to just sip.

The Ninos running up and down the hallways filled with laughter and cheer,

Especially when Tio made a run to the store for candy and more beer.

Always after the stroke of Midnight when the magic really begins,

All sit around the tree and thought, “was I good or bad”, not out loud but from within.

The Santa Klaus factor is always present for the full effect of the distribution of toys,

“Sammy Klaus” my uncle Sam dressed as Santa to play the role for all the kids to enjoy.

Opening presents one by one from the Tias and Tios which are all similar as we all know.

Signaling you over so they can dab you up with cash because they love us so.

It's all in the sleek passing of money because wrapping paper or bows just wouldn’t suffice,

with a full-on blessings and disclaimer to get yourself something nice.

But first, more coquito to fill up our cups,

while the stories of past gatherings filled the room up.

The bendiciones were a plenty with Wepas galore,

I wish we had those Coquito Christmas eves once more.
