We were out, came home
to see a box of cookies
on our porch, left by a neighbor.
We don’t interact much,
though we share wall
They may be thinking,
we have no common grounds
though we are eager to mingle,
but warmth cannot be forced.
People take time,
sometimes the ice never breaks.
Like us,
their parents were immigrants
from the same part of Asia.
Like us,
they are a minority religion here,
they are Muslim, we are Hindu.
And yet, they give a
a box of delicious cookies,
for Christmas,
we are celebrating
the festivals of another.
The kindness that
came our way
was better than cookies,
it's the sweetest thing
humans can savor.

Way to go on all fronts. Good job. Christmas cookies are special in many ways. They seem to bring people together.
