Consider the Ravens
A poetic parody
Dear weary child,
Awake upon another Hail Mary.
Protesting the Monday blues.
*
Consider the Ravens,
They wake too.
You can hear outside your blackout curtains, a muffled crew.
As your thumb drums the sixth-sometimes seventh snooze.
*
Modifying your ringtone to a subtle honking doesn’t smother the white noise of the ravens grokking.
And somehow, you’re rushing out the door, because when it rains it pours.
*
Consider the Raven,
She knows not the way.
But she is a raven, she belongs to the day.
Sometimes to soar amongst us, only to be disregarded.
*
Consider the Raven,
When bitter clouds form array.
She does not query whether to stay.
She senses a flight is nigh.
She knows not where the next slug hides.
But she never goes without.
*
Consider the Raven,
Every day her beak beckons a new song.
Her world is made up of pins and needles, earth scents of woodsy cherry,
pulling a strand of moss furnishing her nose-knit sanctuary.
*
Consider the Raven,
Her universe is feral but so is ours.
You stress-eat on your way to work while you layer on mascara in between cars.
Sitting in traffic, waltzed on by a tumbleweed of plastic.
But you look upon the two ravens seated on the power lines above,
she drops a worm in the beak of another ebony dove.
*
Consider the Raven,
The chilly embrace of satin sheets awaits, by the time dusk falls.
You reach to pull the curtain, and glimpse the raven nestled in her crib of moss.
Blinking its beady eyes,
considering thine,
as if she agrees, but she worships within her means.
*
*
Next time you perceive the rain,
Consider the Ravens,
Two worlds share the same twenty-four hours, in the very same day.

This reminds me of two things:
This was stunning. The repetition of “Consider the Raven” felt like a gentle call to pause and reflect—on both the chaos of our routines and the quiet wisdom of nature. You’ve woven the mundane and the poetic together so seamlessly. I especially loved the imagery of the raven worshipping “within her means.” So much said in so few words. Beautifully done.
And Jesus heard your words & smiled..., as did Koheleth. A marvelous turn with Jesus' teachings & those of the preacher in Ecclesiastes.
I love ravens <3 your poem is great <3
Whoa, this might be my favorite of yours. I love your writing... The same 24 hours as a raven, it just hits deep. LOVE this.
Whoaaaa, this was so deep! Loved it!
