I used to find comfort
In tea time with mini cups and saucers,
And dolls at a wee wooden table.
In the stuffed bunny I cuddled,
Who shared my bed and my dreams.
After the ancient fairytale
Recited for the one hundredth time,
Once upon a time, my make-believe world.

In posters of stars and Hollywood hunks.
Magazines stuffed with fantasy worlds.
Hours of fun, giggling with girlfriends
About boys, and school, and us.
Our lives planned, always together
Friends forever, sworn never to part.
Once upon a time, left in teenage dreams.

I used to find comfort
In nights out with friends, enjoying good times.
Dancing through life and all that comes with.
Working for weekends, nothing more.
With not a care in the world,
Only living in the present.
Taking each moment like it’s the last,
Once upon a time, in the best of days.

These days I find comfort
In family nights in, curled on the couch,
Sharing a snack while watching TV.
Cheering on a favourite team.
Chatting with friends, old and new
About life, about family.
Sometimes those chats, lead to memories
Of younger days, and once upon a times.

That’s when I find comfort
In old faded photos of days since gone.
Of nights out with friends, enjoying times.
Teenage crushes, forever friends
Stuffed rabbits and tea parties.
Treasured memories of a life
Through changes and varying stages,
Captured forever, all moments in time.

I hold close my comfort
Brought from the memories of decades past,
And friends no longer gracing this world.
When wayward tears dampen my smile,
I look for those old photos
In that faded, tattered album.
Recapturing moments of comfort,
Once and forever, for now and all time.

The Ground that doesn’t deserve you
There are places you return to out of habit, not belonging. Rooms that once held you because you didn’t yet know you had the right to leave. People who mistook your endurance for agreement, your silence for consent, your presence for loyalty. Coming back to the ground with clarity means seeing all of it without the old fog softening the edges. You stand in the doorway of your own life and realize that some of the ground you’ve been walking on was never meant to hold your weight.
