A tiny orphan without a hope,
Misunderstood,
Never fitting in.
Different,
Separate.
One of these kids is not like the other.
A White face in a Black crowd
A Black face in a White town
But she had her words.
An angsty teen,
Unlike the rest,
A love of the written word.
Geek.
Nerd.
Not cool like us,
On the sidelines looking in,
Dejected, rejected,
But she had her words.
Scribbles on paper,
The object of her shame.
Poetry.
Prose.
A broken heart,
On tear-stained sheets.
But she had her words.
A mid-life swan,
She came into her own,
Confident,
Beautiful.
One of these women is not like the other.
It doesn't matter anymore,
Because she had her words.
That little baby girl,
Writes.
She expresses love,
She gives it back.
Comfort,
Joy,
In all those words.

Beautiful, yet painfully sad at the same time. Your poem brought tears to my eyes, and the way you have used your pictures tells a story of a young fighter who grew up struggling but strong enough to make something of herself.
