Colors in my Morning

Wakeup

By Rosemary RogersPublished 5 years ago 1 min read
A morning wake up from Louis

Awake to beams of golden sun. A quick rub of my eyes and I am greeted by my black and white tuxedo cat with a clipped ear and jaunty snagged tooth. My slumber ends and I stumble down the canary yellow hallways to be greeted with a chorus of meows from the other anxious kitties.

This is my morning.

The cold brown floors of my kitchen are not as welcoming.

No coffee today.

No leftover pizza.

Only an empty stack of dirty plates that I ignore. Blue.

Kitty food hits the bowls and there is peace.

I grab a glass of water and head to the comfort of my green velvet chair. I sink into my spot. Flip on the TV. Brightness.

The chirping of the morning news.

The heightened pitch of the traffic report. Red.

The review of high school sports highlights from the night before. Blue and gold. Red and white. Team colors. Rivals. I pay no notice.

A quick flip of the remote and the light fades with a single closing spark. Blackness. Silence. Peace restored.

Before I continue my day. Before I dress. Before I set my mind to work. I stare.

I stare at the wall. I listen to sounds of my home. Air pushing through the vents. An unknown appliance ticking internally. The soft clicks of cat paws. The creaking walls.

My mind wanders to the dreams I dreamt while sleeping. To the plans for the day. My fears. My wishes. Goal. New day. New me. At this moment. I always hope.

I turn from the blankness of my walls around me and see the birds and chipmunk scurrying about the lush green world outside. Over the white gravel pieces the chipmunk carries away his morning prize. The birds fan away leaves with their busy flights from branch to branch. Sigh. It’s my turn now to join the morning pace.
