COLD POETRY Nine Poems from Snow and Sun

A Collection of Nine Short Poems and Pictures from Snow-Covered Nature

By Øivind H. SolheimPublished 4 years ago 2 min read

1.

The sun and the snow

The sun and the snow

the forest and the clouds

the sky above the lake

and all this beautiful

It’s all in total

this wonderful thing

to be able to exercise

and ski long walks in the woods

— and never feel tired

I Proudly Get Up

I rise to the sky

I show my profile

my strength

I can stand upright

I am one who can move on

in the track that lies there

-right in front of me

- - -

2.

A Trip in the White and Cold

Published on February 24, 2022 in ILLUMINATION

Volatile impressions from an afternoon trip in the white and cold. —

These ski trips, it’s just something I have to do: Get out, spend a few hours in the white, cold.

4.

The first skier

The first skier I met

a little boy

six or seven years

— on a trip all alone

in the forest

Two skiers

Towards the horizon

two skiers

one little and one tall

on the way

further up

in the direction of

the unknow

Pale winter sun

the forest plain

dressed in white

cold

Trees

Trees with frozen roots

stretches

up against the dim light

from a gray sky

- - -

Returns

Returns

casual and light style

on narrow skis

glides safely

down the track

- - -

Stands alone

Stands alone

left behind

in the white

cold universe

Thin twigs

spread in all directions

Failed

through the year that passed

- - -

4.

The Tallest Peak

About not reaching the top and being happy with it

To go up

To go up there

on the highest peak

is probably out of my reach

But what does it matter?

I can feel good

here where I am

It can be about

reaching all the way up

or whether to accept

that this is how

things are now

---

5.

Sun Ahead

---

Sun ahead there

tall, heavy spruces

all around me

Wonder

what is the light

far ahead?

What it is like

to go against-track

in all that white?

---

6.

My Shoulders

Photo: Øivind H. Solheim

My shoulders

carry

what has been

in confident anticipation

of what comes

---

7.

The Light from The Snow

The light from the snow

comes to us

from places

we have never seen

The light on the snow

is what we can look for

when we walk

pointless

in the forest

---

8.

Untouched

The snow lies quiet

between the pines

The skis glide easily

in the track

The snow is good today

it will be a nice day.

9.

The Snow Is Everything - A Walk in the Cold White

The snow is endless

the snow is everything

the snow covers it all

Traces of feet in the snow

on an endless road ahead

upwards

I'm going there

I hear a voice:

-where does your road go?
