Cold Nose

A Sonnet for Abby

By Chad UmbergerPublished 11 months ago 1 min read
The day we brough Abby home as a foster, and gave a sick dog a new lease on life.

Surprising as her cold, wet nose can be,

Beneath warm covers, where heat confines.

She nudges close and nestles under me,

As I scratch gently down her furry lines.

~

Her love, unconditional, pure, and free,

Abby sleeps, secure until the dawning.

Her place in our lives was meant to be,

Fast asleep, she stirs only when yawning.

~

A cold winter night, a chill in the air,

Another day awaits, the frost anew.

The comfort of her cold, brown nose is there,

A bond that dog lovers can relate to.

~

Loyal to mom and dad, from head to toes,

She brings us comfort with her soft, cold nose.

/Author's Note:

My wife and I brought Abby into our lives from the local shelter in 2016 as a foster. She was very sick with Demodex Mange. We healed her with no meds, just a change in diet, a holistic approach. Once healed, just before Christmas, we received the call from the rescue's founder, asking if we were ready to post her for adoption. Abby was our 23rd foster dog, and our last until Autumn of 2023. We adopted Abby on Christmas 2016. She has been through a lot in her life, including two knee surgeries and the loss of her big brother dog Marley. Abby and her other brother pup Jagger are bonded and they sleep in the comfort of our bed every night. She also has an adult cat brother named Smudge, and a new Kitten sister named Smidge.

Abby's cold nose and hot body nuzzling up next to me ensures she knows that I am aware of the fact she is safe and trusts my wife and I. It melts me every single night. She is the definition of unconditional love.
