Cold Cleric

An Ekphrastic Sonnet

By D. J. ReddallPublished about a year ago 1 min read
"The Skating Minister" by Henry Raeburn, 1784

Skating requires excellent balance

Two thin blades carving frozen water spell

Doom or delight during this chilly dance

How thin the margin ‘twixt heaven and hell!

Ministers move along that difference

Stern and severe as they might seem to be

Whence we have come, and how we travel hence

They claim to know, but their skating we see

A frozen loch, a grey, mountain touched sky

A dark dancer, pirouetting on blades

His flashing feet are swift, none can deny

Oddly beautiful are his escapades

Performing tricks on a surface quite thin

The minister lauds holiness, scorns sin

Ekphrastic

Well done! Hmmm, perhaps the skating minister will one day join forces with the flying nun
