Coffee

how I take it

When people ask me how I take it,

I make the joke: “Like my men,”

I slyly reply, winking at my husband,

who has roots in County Cork

and takes his black,

“Irish.” My love of whiskey

is no secret, so laughter follows.

I put cream and sugar in

my morning coffee—

life has forced buffets of bitterness

down my throat, and

I will not have it

in my coffee.

Lol funny joke...nice poem, about enjoying coffee and your husband.

  • The way you connect the simple act of drinking coffee with such a deep reflection is wonderful. That part about life and bitterness is very true.

You are rather beguiling at times. I love whisky but without the e cos Scottish pedantry.

  • Cute work!
