Clockwork Man

Poem

By Paul CrockerPublished 8 years ago 1 min read

There's a man sat upon a counter, staring into space.

Look closely and you see an empty expression on his face.

After the light is switched off and door locked, he'll begin to breathe.

Knowing he can relax, sure that his creator did leave.

This clockwork man, made from cogs, springs and bolts.

Jumped to his sprung feet with a jolt.

A little rusty from the shop's dusty universe.

Terrified of the sound of an opening purse.

Moving with a creak and a clang.

He's happy enough with the mind from which he sprang.

That clockwork man, walking back and forth along a moonlit shop window.

Awkwardly dancing amongst the beams that softly glow.

Dreaming dreams and wishing wishes between each one.

Feeling slightly sad about the thought of the sun.

He knows he can't be himself.

Left upon a high, unreachable shelf.

But he stops and thinks as he gazes up at the star speckled sky.

He would feel in Heaven's company that high.

A smile dents itself across his face of copper.

Excited at the thought of the first shopper.

There's a clockwork man sat upon a shelf, about to be bought.
