Summer Is

The crack of a bat, the roar of the crowd, the smell of popcorn in the stands

A worm on a hook, a cane pole in his hands, a boy on the bank of a stream

A woman on a bench, under a tree, nodding off, an open book in her hands

A girl on a bike, newspapers in her basket, working toward tomorrow's dream

Crowds at the beach, enjoying the sand, letting the sun burn them brown

Men and women in a bar, sitting in booths, eating pizza and pitchers of beer

Folk in their gardens, turning the soil, pinching off dead bits, putting bulbs down

Couples taking strolls, holding hands, as the cooler darkness of day draws near

Carloads of people sharing blankets watching fireworks explode in the sky

Hot dogs and burgers grilled on the barbie as the young toss a ball

Cars back up for miles going to or from the beach to celebrate the fourth of July

Suzy waits in maternity, hubby waits in the waiting room, MawMaw awaits a call

Summer is there for everyone, everyone who takes the time

To look, to sense, to feel, to hear that summer is a state of mind
