The Swimsuit
The swimming pool was free but swimsuits were not
Cut offs were forbidden, I really don’t know why
Not just my problem, but also for friends in my lot
But we found a workable solution, my friends and I
We came up with one swimsuit, I don’t know from where
And hid it in the eaves of the changing room for boys
So that first come first serve the five of us could share
Wear and then return it so the pool the others could enjoy
That whole summer we swam, sharing a suit soaking wet
Our original benefactor I wondered who he might be
Saved the summer for the five of us, we are in his debt
And the swimsuit in the eaves lingers in my memory
And in retrospect as I think of those summer days
Not having a swimsuit, perhaps, was the better way
