Churchkhela!!!

An Ode to Georgian snack

By Lana V LynxPublished 4 months ago Updated 4 months ago 1 min read
Churchkhela from my landlord

My landlord gifted me Churchkhela

A famous Georgian power snack.

Made of walnuts coated in thick grape juice,

It goes back thousands of years.

Ancient Georgian warriors took it with them

On their long tours and battles.

Like honey, it never spoils and needs no fridge.

Many call it "Georgian Snickers"

But I would say it's the world's first

Known and documented power bar.

Not too sweet, entirely natural, it powers you up

For hours and hours with no sense of guilt or hunger.

What will I do without it when I leave Georgia?

Luckily, not for the next nine months.

my Churchkhela in pieces, to show the inside

I've forgotten that the Feast Community also has a 600-word limit. That’s where I tried to submit it first. Resubmitting to Poets even though I don't consider this Ode good poetry.

    Sounds YUMMY!

  • Loved this! Both a tasty history lesson and a personal touch—now I really want to try Churchkhela myself. 🍇🥜

Looks like a blood sausage so surprised to read it is made of fruit and nuts. Must sure beat a Kendal Mint Cake, which is just a slab of sugar infused with mint flavour. Great item to introduce.

It looks good. Energy is needed. Nice writing.

  • My mom used to make something like this using dates and some kinda nut. I wish I can try this though. Why are they in different colours? Are they different flavours?

I would've never thought that this was made of walnuts and coated in grape juice. Not just because of my dirty mind 😊 I could tell the two flavours must be delicious together. Awesome that it doesn't need the fridge. They've got an interesting look to them when cut open. Thanks for sharing this Georgian snickers, I've learnt something new 🤗❤️

Churchkhela, eh? It's a new one on me but that landlord is a star for gifting it to you. May you always have the power of churchkhela!
