Christmases Past and Present

I explore the pain and joy pre- and post- pandemic

1990s

Lava bulbs glow amid evergreen

Upon the daughter humming hymns;

The spirit sparks divine embers within

As she recalls the babe is her friend.

2020

Pandemic darkness surrounds her soul;

The winter blues obscure her hope.

Many succumb, marked deaths of despair

Besides the Covid death counter square.

---

May all hope for a Christmas star again?

Yes: Jupiter, Saturn align in night's sky

Three kings need not be led astray

Angels still lead shepherds today

2024

She garbs her son in robes and rings;

He presents a gift to the newborn king.

She prays her sons will also know

That babe, that king, as their friend.

Friendship
