Here's a poem I wrote after I spent my Christmas with a friend of mines family out in the country in Mississippi. It was a great little road trip from Louisiana to there and I love a good road trip. :)

A nice long ride to the country side with me
and my friends by my side.
Truck stop breakfasts on the way to what
was sure to be a monumental day.
Arriving at a real log cabin in the woods
painted a picture of Christmas just looking
as it traditionally should.
Snow fell lightly on the acreage as far as you
could see for miles.
The Christmas lights were as bright as the
children's smiles.
Wrapping paper littered the living room, children
zoomed up on candy not sleeping anytime soon.
Laughter and stories were shared by real
people who you knew how much they cared.
The smell of food wafted through the house and
when dinner was served we all stood and prayed
for all the Lord blessed us with and gave.
I was almost a stranger in this place,
been one time before, but still an unfamiliar face.
I felt welcome and wanted which meant so much
to me, having been rejected by my own family.
The most touching of all was watching the love
of siblings, the jokes and pokes and laughter
and tears all showed how much they held each
other so very dear.
When it was time to go, I felt they were glad
I had been there, their farewell showed love
and the feeling hung in the air.
This made going home hard, to a dark and lonely
room, no presents, no greeting from my family
but I knew I had friends who cared that
I'd be seeing again soon.
So my Christmas was filled with what the holiday
is about, the baby Jesus, children and love which
was in abundance, to that there was no doubt.
